Archaeological Site of Amarinthos

The area was considered a place of worship of Artemis Amarissia from the excavations, however, proved that it is prehistoric and classical settlement and that the church was on the plain. The name of Amarinthos mentioned in Linear B script.

History

   Natural harbor in the southern Gulf of Evia, inhabited throughout the prehistoric and classical period to Roman times (3000 BC - 1st century AD.). In Byzantine times the area were built two churches. The settlement and depository of the sanctuary of Artemis Amarissia were excavated between the years 1987-1990. The excavations are continuing.
