Kimi archaeological area

The archaeological site of Kimi is located three kilometers from the sea, the hill Viglatouri. Here was revealed a whole village of prehistoric and Geometric period with houses, temples, squares, streets and tombs. The ruins that are visible and cover all the slopes of the hill, belonging mainly to the settlement of geometrical years, whose extent has not yet found a whole.   Have revealed rectangular and arched buildings, paved roads, built of small stones, pebbles and shells pressed, and a small section of wall at the foot of the hill. The core of the village square and there was an oval stone building, the sanctuary, which was looted and has given rich pottery, which dates chronologically in the mid-eighth century. BC The arch was the first that came to light during the excavation of 1984. This building can be interpreted as a sacred monument, according to the opinion of the archaeologist e. Sapouna-Sakellaraki. Corresponding examples of oval buildings from this period are known from Evia (in Lefkandi where and religious holidays celebrated in honor of the dead), but outside of Euboea, in Smyrna and the Supreme Court. The case for the operation of the building and strengthened by having a side paved area, which was founded on Protogeometric graves. To the east of paved open space revealed a rock rose with many animal bones, which was probably a kind of grid, where the sacrifices were made. The shape of the altar is known in the East and the Cyclades. The sanctuary, which according to the pottery found there, flourished from the mid-8th century. BC and destroyed around 700 BC, is considered to have served as a place of worship, nobility, who traveled and gone away from home.   Beneath the ruins of the settlement geometric important relics preserved old residential phases, reaching up to the Neolithic period. From there a prehistoric era distinguished buildings craft facilities (ceramic kilns of Middle Helladic period) and the so-called "palace" of the Mycenaean period, under the later monument.

History

In the region of modern Kimi Viglatouri Oxilithos Hill have discovered the ruins of ancient Kimi, the city associated with the Greek colonization of the eighth century. BC the West and the creation of the homonymous colony in Great Greece. The position, which has excellent sea views, situated beside the River sleeve (the ancient Achelous) and in the middle of a fertile plain, elements attracted residents from prehistory to the Roman years.   The oldest signs of habitation in the area date back to the Final Neolithic period and limited to fragments of pottery. The first phase of residential confirmed Kimi goes back to the Middle Helladic period (1900-1650 BC). These buildings craft facilities from which they can not draw conclusions safely ca especially the character of the settlement. Life continued on the hill to the Mycenaean period, as shown by the few remains of buildings and of contemporary ceramics.   The peak period of settlement in Viglatouri coincides with the geometric period. Just below the top of the hill on the southwest side, which is easier to access, identified the geometric area, which must have been walled, according to some indications have not yet been investigated. The settlement, which used the old building and tissue accretion in the ruins of earlier phases, had a sacred shrine and house, houses, squares and streets. Kimi this season must have been an important city with contacts all over the known world of the location of Evia, which served as a bridge to the movement of people and goods from north to south and from east to west. This case demonstrates the number and variety of the findings so far have yielded the settlement.   Reference to ancient Kimi is the first century. AD by Strabo, who wrote that the Italian Cyme, located in the Gulf of Naples, is indeed Euboean colony of Chalkis and wave ("Chalkis Kimi and waves very old building. And the fleet agontes Ippoklis the Kymaios and the Megasthenis Chalkideus diomologisanto sfas to them, while the colony is not of the eponymian, ergo hand prosagorefetai Kimi ktisai d it Chalcedeans dokousi "). As evidenced by this passage, the inhabitants of these Euboean cities was initiated during the last quarter of the eighth century. BC the adventure of colonization of the West and managed to overcome by sea barriers of coverage for a vast distance and time the dangers of an unknown world.   In Greece the existence of ancient Kimi was questioned for more than one hundred years. Insufficient reference to ancient sources, the view that the colony in Italy were mainly wind and ignorance about the location of the city, as relics of the period of colonization had not been found, leaving open the scope of the discussions and doubts. This gap came to cover the excavations on the hill Viglatouri, launched in 1984 by archaeologist E.. Sapouna-Sakellarakis and continued for a decade. Immediately after the excavation carried out maintenance of the walls of buildings.
