Το σύμπλεγμα των νησιών είναι η δημιούργημα ηφαιστειώδους ενέργειας και αποτελεί έναν ενιαίο ηφαιστειακό σχηματισμό.Το ηφαίστειο λειτούργησε κατά την Τεταρτογενή περίοδο του Καϊνοζωϊκού αιώνα της προϊστορίας της γης. Πριν γίνει το τεκτονικό καταβυθισμα του Μαλιακού, τα Λιχαδονήσια ήταν ενωμένα με την χερσόνησο της Λιχάδας. Μεγάλα τμήματα των νησιών βυθίστηκαν από ένα μεγάλο σεισμό το 426 π.Χ...Σύμφωνα με τη μυθολογία , τα Λιχαδονίσια σχηματίστηκαν από το σώμα του Λίχα. Η Διηάνειρα,γυναίκα του Ηρακλή νομίζοντας ότι την απατά ,του έστειλε με το Λίχα ένα
φαρμακερό χιτώνα .Ο Ηρακλής όταν φόρεσε το χιτώνα άρχισε να υποφέρει από φρικτούς πόνους και εξαγριωμένος άρπαξε το Λίχα και τον εκσφενδόνισε στη θάλασσα. Από
τα μέλη του σώματος του σχηματίστηκαν τα Λιχαδονήσια . Επίσης λέγεται ότι η Μεγάλη Στρογγυλή είναι το κεφάλι του.
